Cologne Cathedral (in German, Kölner Dom, officially Hohe Domkirche St. Peter) is a Catholic church in the Gothic style, construction began in 1248 and was not completed until 1880. It is located in the center of the city of Cologne. At 157 meters high it was the tallest building in the world until the completion of the Washington Monument in 1884, at 170 meters. It is perhaps the most visited monument in Germany. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996.
